The oil is high in fatty acids, including the essential omega 6 linoleic acid and the non-essential omega 6 gamma linolenic acid (GLA). Healthy individuals can make GLA from linoleic acid. Due to illness or dietary deficiency, this conversion may become impaired in some people.

GLA is important in the production of prostaglandins, some of which are precursors to oestrogen, which is why many women regularly supplement with evening primrose oil. GLA is also important in the production of other prostaglandins that act in the vascular and immune systems, as well as in muscles.
